what I learned by creating an imperfect newsletter

If you have ever thought about creating a newsletter for your business, community or circle of pets, read this.

On February 3rd 2023, 3:57 PM, I pushed the “Send” button.

Sometimes, life presents you with a button that can change your life.

Do you press it?

Or do you ignore it?

I was hitting send on the first edition of this newsletter.

It went out to 9 wonderful humans who trusted their inboxes with me.

It wasn’t perfect.

But, it didn’t have to be.

The Benefits of Creating a Newsletter That’s Imperfect

By taking imperfect action, I forced myself to learn.

And I learned that it’s OK to make mistakes:

To have the odd broken link,

Or a typo.

As long as the value comes through.

As long as y’all keep reading.

As long as y’all keep telling me how you’re using the newsletter’s takeaways.

Those are big wins, even if the content isn’t perfect.

Doubling Down

The are only so many weeks in a life-time.

And I have so many things in my idea pile that I want to share.

So I decided that “every so often” wasn’t going to do the newsletter justice.

Around May last year, I set myself the challenge to start sending fortnightly at Wednesday 5:30PM (GMT +1100).

On the dot.

Without fail.

Even during the silly season.

This forced me to tighten my habits around getting ideas, refining them and publishing them.

What was once an uncomfortable, intermittent process slowly became a delightful, satisfying challenge.
